- SYMPTOMS. Large, foul-smelling, pale, frothy, fatty stools, abdominal
- distension, vomiting and weakness.
- CAUSES. This is a childhood disease that is relatively uncommon. It is
- thought to be linked to heredity and it involves an intolerance to protein of
- rye and wheat. The impaired absorption of nutrients from abnormal changes in
- the small intestine lining is the result of this intolerance. Although a
- childhood disease, it may appear in adults. The adult form is call sprue.
- TREATMENT. A proper diet will have to be maintained.
